About Us The Assistant Bishop of
Virginia first organized St. Peter’s in 1892 in Lynch Station.
In 1911, the
Town of Altavista had grown, and so had the congregation. The
group purchased what had been
the Methodist Church and moved into Altavista. Members completely
renovated the building, About 26 families are now regular participants in worship ceremonies each Sunday. The facility is large enough to easily accommodate us, and small enough to provide an atmosphere of intimacy. The age of the building adds an historic -- and timeless -- perspective. We are served by The Reverend Karen Joy Kelly, Rector, whom we share with Westminster-Canterbury (an Episcopal-Presbyterian retirement facility in Lynchburg) where she serves as full-time Chaplain. Hence, our regular services alternate between a very meaningful Morning Prayer led by lay members and, on alternate Sundays, Holy Eucharist led by our priest. The Vestry functions as the Board of Directors of St. Peter’s. The Senior Warden serves as chair, and is assisted by the Junior Warden. Members are elected each year at the Annual Meeting, a meeting of all members, each of whom has a vote in the management of our parish in electing its officers.
